J. D. Salinger, Literary Recluse, Dies at 91

J. D. Salingerが27日に亡くなった。CHARLES McGRATHという人が長文の追悼記事をニュ－ヨーク・タイムズに書いている。そのタイトルが上記のもの"J. D. Salinger, Literary Recluse, Dies at 91"である。「文学の隠遁者」である。

“If you really want to hear about it, the first thing you’ll probably want to know is where I was born and what my lousy childhood was like, and how my parents were occupied and all before they had me, and all that David Copperfield kind of crap, but I don’t feel like going into it, if you want to know the truth.” と始まるのが、永遠の？ベストセラー“The Catcher in the Rye”の冒頭のセンテンスである。この死亡記事を書いたCHARLES McGRATHは次のように言っている。

“Catcher” was published in 1951, and its very first sentence, distantly echoing Mark Twain, struck a brash new note in American literature.

Huckleberry Finnを受け継いで放浪者の新しい声をアメリカ文学に刻んだのがHolden Caulfieldであったわけだ。
